Renaissance walls

Seven bastions, seven viewpoints

The ring of walls commissioned by Philip II and built between 1554 and 1585 by Italian engineers Giovanni Battista Calvi and Jacobo Paleazzo Fratin encompasses seven angular bastions. Walk the full circuit (roughly 2 km) for a changing panorama of sea, salt pans and old-town rooftops.

• Baluard de Sant PereNorth-east corner; sweeping views over Ibiza harbour and the ferry lanes to the mainland.
• Baluard de Sant JoanEast side; looks across Ses Feixes, the ancient irrigated wetlands behind the town.
• Baluard de Santa LlúciaSouth-east; wide view over the marina and the modern port, especially rewarding at dusk.
• Baluard de Sant BernatSouth face; the most photographed vantage, cathedral behind you, open sea ahead, Formentera on the horizon on clear days.
• Baluard de Sant JordiSouth-west; access to the upper promenade with its cannons and sea-facing stone benches.
• Baluard de Sant JaumeWest side; overlooks the lower town (La Marina) and the cruise-ship anchorage below.
• Baluard de Santa TeclaNorth-west; the quietest bastion, offering unobstructed views across the Ibizan countryside.
