Getting there
Dalt Vila rises directly above Ibiza Town’s port. Enter on foot through the Portal de ses Taules from the Vara de Rey and the Mercat Vell, a five-minute walk from the harbour.

- Is Dalt Vila free to visit?
- The streets, ramparts, gates and bastions are free to enter at any time. The cathedral charges a small admission fee. Individual museum admission is between €1 and €5.
- What are the opening hours of Dalt Vila?
- The old town is open 24 hours every day. Cathedral: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00. Museu Puget: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–14:00.
- How do I get to Dalt Vila from the port?
- Walk five minutes from the harbour along Avenida d’Ignasi Wallis to the Mercat Vell, then up through the Portal de ses Taules, the main gate. Taxis drop off at the foot of the gate.
- Where can I park near Dalt Vila?
- There is no public parking inside the walls. The nearest paid car parks are Parking Es Pratet and Parking del Puerto, both a 5-minute walk from the main gate. Blue zones in the centre are free after 22:00 and on Sundays.
- How long does a visit to Dalt Vila take?
- Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for a relaxed walk through the streets and up to the cathedral viewpoint. Add 30–45 minutes for each museum you visit.
- When is the best time to visit Dalt Vila?
- Early morning (before 10:00) in July and August for cool air and quiet streets. May, September and October offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. Evenings are atmospheric with the walls floodlit.
- Is Dalt Vila the same as Ibiza Old Town?
- Yes. Dalt Vila (Catalan for “Upper Town”) is the walled, fortified hilltop at the heart of Ibiza’s old town. The wider old town area also includes La Marina and Sa Penya at the foot of the walls.
Walking route
The climb through Dalt Vila
A self-guided route from the main gate to the highest bastions. Wear comfortable shoes, the limestone paving is smooth and the gradient is steep in places. The full loop takes 60 to 90 minutes at a relaxed pace.

Portal de ses Taules
The main Renaissance gate, flanked by two Roman busts and the coat of arms of the Spanish Crown. Cross the drawbridge over the former moat and pass through the porticoed parade ground where the guard corps was once housed.

Plaça de Vila
The elongated main square just inside the gate. Lined with restaurants, galleries, and craft shops, it is the natural first stop for a drink before the climb. A good morning market is held here in summer.

Carrer Major & Sa Portella gate
Follow Carrer Major steeply upward past whitewashed houses and bougainvillea. Pass through the Sa Portella gate (a medieval arch in the original inner wall) to enter the highest, oldest quarter of the town.

Plaça de la Catedral
The cathedral square at the summit. The Gothic-Renaissance Cathedral of Our Lady of the Snows was built on Phoenician and Moorish foundations. The square itself offers a 270-degree panorama over the harbour and the sea.

Bastions Sant Jordi & Sant Bernat
Walk along the wall walkway west of the cathedral to reach these two bastions. From here you have an unobstructed panoramic view of the sea on three sides, the best viewpoint in the entire old town.

Descent via Carrer d'Enmig
Return down the narrow Carrer d'Enmig, one of the oldest lanes in the town. It passes S'Escalinata and the lower residential quarter before rejoining Plaça de Vila and the Portal de ses Taules.
